Umbraco is renowned as the friendliest and most flexible open-source Content Management System and it’s the only CMS we use to deliver all kinds of great web solutions. It’s become the world’s most popular Microsoft .Net open-source platform with over 1M Umbraco sites. At bd2 we’ve been implementing Umbraco since 2008 and are now a Gold Partner, one of around 60 in the UK.
Umbraco has published its first Impact Report covering all aspects of its approach and operations. The Report naturally starts with people, as this is always the key focus both in terms of the Umbraco Community and the Partner network, here too it’s known as the friendliest community. Umbraco supports this through initiatives, festivals, summits and meet ups. For us this includes attending Codegarden at Umbraco’s HQ in Odense, Denmark, which is their biggest event and spans 3 days with around 1500 attendees.
“Umbraco Festivals and events are the perfect opportunity to meet like-minded people & friends within the Umbraco community. A place where thresholds vanish, inclusiveness flourishes, and friendliness thrive, everyone is made to feel welcome at an Umbraco event!”
Corné Hoskam Software Engineer, The Netherlands
This year it’s preceded by a Business Summit for partners, and we’ll be sending people to both to combine learning, inspiration collaboration and no doubt some fine Danish beers! As well as events in Denmark, as the Umbraco community has grown in the UK and globally, so the events have spread and we’re lucky to be close to Manchester where there is a thriving meet up community which we join regularly.
“Without doubt, joining the Umbraco community is the single most important move I’ve made in my entire career. It’s given me a sense of belonging in the tech community that I didn’t believe was possible.”
Dennis Adolfi, Team Lead Sweden
Umbraco has also implemented programmes for direct employees with ‘a holistic approach that includes exciting tasks, supportive colleagues, a welcoming and respectful atmosphere, and opportunities for personal and professional growth’ including a focus on diversity with a female mentorship programme which is helping it to exceed the Danish national average of females in the industry of over 30%. They also run various education programmes to support training at all levels.
"I strongly believe that when we share our experiences and knowledge with each other, we build empathy, understanding, and connection. Being an MVP makes me feel seen as well as validated and motivates me to continue working to make this a more diverse and welcoming community — one where everyone feels they are safe, they belong, and their voice is valued.”
Erica Quessenberry UX/UI Consultant, USA
The Report also covers Umbraco’s environmental impact, which is critical for any business these days, and they’ve adopted numerous initiatives to reduce their carbon footprint, such as reducing travel and energy use in their own offices. From our perspective, as it has a knock effect for our own, the most notable effort revolves around the efficiency of its code. Data centres are actually huge consumers of energy and by optimising the code it has a significant reduction on CO2 emissions as the servers have less work to do. As we move more clients to Umbraco Cloud we’ll benefit further.
"2022 was a great year. It was a truly impactful year for Umbraco. We grew as a company, as a tech organization, and as a key player in the CMS industry. 2022 also marked many new beginnings, including our journey toward carbon neutrality and initiatives towards improving D&I. Our ambitions for 2023 are even bigger: we want to create even more positive impact for our partners, customers, community, and our employees, and reduce our negative impact on the planet.”
Kim Sneum, CEO Umbraco
